Members of the IE Department along with 84 students got together last November 7, 2013 in the Engineering Theatre for the 1st General Assembly. The event, which was hosted by Charlie Santos and Franco Del Rosario, started off with a friendly game comprising of participants from the two home organizations (UP CIEM and UP IEC).
Tokens of appreciation were given to Ma’am Iris, our previous Department Chair, and to Sir Lowell as well, to welcome him as our new Department Chair. Engineering Cup participants, particularly those who demonstrated much passion in playing their respective sports were awarded onstage. Those who received awards or recognition outside the University within the year, dubbed as “IE Achievers”, were also acknowledged.
The highlight of the event was the student-teacher dialogue, wherein students anonymously submitted questions/issues for the Department to answer or comment on. Some of the topics discussed regarded the new IE curriculum, certain IE majors, and the new IE-ME building. For more details or information, minutes of the assembly can be found in the UPD DIEOR FB group.
The Filipino youth today are building their future not just by studying hard, reaping good grades and developing their talents and skills. They are also building their future by planting trees. This was the creed of more than 30 volunteers who represented various schools and organizations during the Project G! Tree-Planting in Plaridel, Bulacan held last October 13.
The volunteers planted 500 Narra saplings in the project site through the assistance of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The manpower needed and the funds raised for the activity were generated through the involvement of families, organizations and students from the University of the Philippines, the Ateneo De Manila University, Xavier University, Philippine Science High School, and St. Pedro Poveda College, among others.
Led by the UP Industrial Engineering Club, Project G! is a movement that aims to define the role of the Filipino youth in environmental conservation and sustainability in a fast-changing world. It wants to involve students, young professionals and organizations in promoting environmental awareness and action towards a sustainable future.
Seedlings for coming tree-planting activities may still be bought. For more information, please visit http://projectgph.weebly.com/.
IE Phoenix Soars to Bronze in the Engineering Cup 2013
The Industrial Engineering Department varsity landed a spot on the final podium behind the Civil Engineering and MMM departments after over two months of sports and games in this year’s edition of the Engineering Cup. The Engg Cup 2013, themed “Fury”, was hotly contested by all eight departments in the College of Engineering as each department fought to bring the cup home.
Following the opening ceremonies held last July 26 and the Engineering Theatre, the IE Phoenix got off to a hot start, defeating the GE Garuda in Ultimate Frisbee and the ChE Centaurs in Men’s Basketball as well as the EEE Leviathan in Women’s basketball. The charge of the Phoenix however was halted along with the rest of the competition by the rains, forcing the Touch Rugby and Lawn Tennis matches to be postponed. The Men’s Basketball games still pushed through, but eventual champions MMM Golems proved too tough for the IE Phoenix in a very heated encounter.
The women’s teams would not be deterred as they trampled the ChE Centaurs in basketball and the ME Mermaids and the CE Cerberus in volleyball.
The first medals finally came in as IE Phoenix finished third in the mixed badminton competition. The Phoenix futsal team got off to a slow start as they drew their opener against the CE Cerberus while the men’s volleyball team fell short against the EEE Leviathans and the women’s basketball team was outgunned by the CE Cerberus as well. The men’s basketball and volleyball teams would also fall short against the ME Mermaids in their do-or-die matches to stay in contention for their championships. But the fire wasn’t out for the Phoenix just yet as the ultimate frisbee team recorded a dominant win over the EEE Leviathans while the swimming teams managed to bring home another bronze medal. However the MMM Golems proved to be tough opponents as they downed the women’s basketball team. They bounced back against the CS Sphinx to bag yet another bronze medal for the IE Phoenix.
The IE Phoenix began its late push for a spot on the final podium as the women’s volleyball team continued their blazing run as they beat the ChE Centaurs to soar to the finals against the EEE Leviathan. Meanwhile the IE Frisbee team advanced to the finals with a very narrow victory over the MMM Golems where they defeated the CE Cerberus to land the first gold medals for the department. Despite dropping game 1 of the finals, the ladies of IE Phoenix volleyball team proved too hot to handle as they would emerge victorious in games 2 and 3 to bring home the women’s volleyball gold.
Futsal games finally resumed with the IE team dominating their matches against the EEE Leviathan and the ME Mermaids to make it to the semi-finals where they would defeat the ChE Centaurs to battle the CE Cerberus once more in the finals. But the Cerberus proved too strong as the IE Phoenix had to settle for silver in futsal. The players of the IE lawn tennis teams would also emerge victorious, bringing home the gold for men’s double and the silver for the mixed doubles while the mixed doubles for table tennis would also deliver another gold medal for IE Phoenix.

As the Engg Cup 2013 winded down, people gathered for the Dominion Run, a Despicable Me themed fun run held in the UP Academic Oval last September 1. The Engineering Cup 2013 officially closed on September 6 with the CE Cerberus being crowned as the champions with 5-6-2 score in medals, MMM Golems coming in second with a 5-1-3 and the IE Phoenix with a late push landing at third with a 4-2-3.
